FAQ’s

  • What food do you feed puppies?
  • – We feed NutriSource Puppy Large Breed.  All our adult dogs are on NutriSource Performance Large Breed dog food.
  • Will my puppy be house broke?

-That would be nice! Sorry! Started on housebreaking, yes. Housebroke, no.  We do litter box train.  Information will be in your welcome email when purchasing a puppy.

  • What will my puppy come with?

-Puppies go to forever homes with AKC registration application, vaccination & deworming report, microchip information, starter food & emergency 3 day NuVet supply.

  • Will you name my puppy & if so can I change the name?

-More then likely NO.  If we name them we get attached & have to keep them.  Occasionally there’s a pup that comes along that gets named & it just sticks. But it’s up to each family rather they change a name.

  • What does your guarantee cover?

-Our guarantee is under Our Care/Guarantee on our website. Our Guarantee

  • Will my Puppy’s nose stay black?

-We cannot guarantee that.  We breed to AKC Labrador standards & have NO dilute factored breeding Labradors.  All DD/BB/ee color coat. There is such a thing called “snow nose”, check that out, & it seems as some get older their nose does turn or get some pinkish.

-We now have an exception… Rumor is our only Girl(or dog in general) here that carries chocolate.  So she does have a pinkish(liver) nose & lighter eyes.  Her color coat is DD/bb/ee.  All others are DD/BB/ee.  Looks like in Rumor’s pedigree she has a chocolate Grandparent in her 5th generation on her Father’s side & 4th generation on her Mother’s side.  My guess is both Rumor’s parents carried chocolate as well & got Rumor.  We’re very curious to see what happens when we breed Rumor to a non-carrying chocolate male.

  • Have you ever had puppies returned?

-Yes.  Just a couple.  Sometimes different things come up in families to where they can no longer care for their animal.  It’s a heartbreaking decision for them but it is also the most responsible.

  • Have you ever had puppies show hip or elbow issues later?

-Yes.  Very few. We can name & tell you about each & every one of them.  Puppies are living, breathing little things & things do happen that is out of our control..  We do everything we possibly can to try to prevent issues that can occur.  With all that said, we have also brought puppies in with the most perfect pedigrees & excellent testing & our puppy show signs or fails a test.  It’s devastating.  Unfortunately things just happen….

  • Do you remove dewclaws?

-Nope.  Here’s the link why.  Dewclaw removal

  • Will my puppy be microchipped?

-Yes.  Microchip information will be sent with them when they go to their forever homes.

  • Is it an option not to get my puppy microchipped?

-No, sorry. All puppies leave our place microchipped.

  • My Veterinarian recommends my puppy not getting any vaccinations until the puppy is in his/her forever home.  Is it an option to opt out of vaccinations?

-No way! Some, very few, veterinarians do recommend that vaccinations should not be given until puppies are to their forever homes.  We’re not comfortable at all with puppies leaving with absolutely no protection.  We do not allow puppies outside in our own yard until they’ve had at least one vaccination. Puppies are not fully protected until they’ve had 4 vaccinations but they need at least one before going to their forever homes.  Our vaccination/deworming protocol can be viewed here.

  • Do you send out a written bill of sale?

-If you feel like one of our puppies is a good fit for you & your family we send out a purchase agreement/breeder guarantee that suites the purpose of a written bill of sale.

  • Do you sell with full registration?

-Full registration is available to approved homes with an additional fee.  We do not sell to breeding homes with dilute factored dogs.  We are not against diluted dogs, we feel it’s the care of the animal. BUT we do not want any of our dogs bred to dilute factored dogs.  We also want a understanding of genetic testing that needs to be done before breeding.

-TO SHOW HOMES…. Full registration can be added at a later date after spay/neuter is done with NO additional fee.  But most show homes start at a early age & need full upon taking puppy to forever home. In that case, full registration needs to be added to the initial purchase.

  • Do you promote NuVet Supplements because you get a ‘kick back’?

-No.  We get ‘kick backs’ on several other things( food, microchips) too but they don’t ever seem to be mentioned like NuVet does.  We are firm believers in NuVet Supplements, all our dogs & puppies receive NuVet. Here is why…

  • Why do you breed yellow Labradors only?

-I’m not sure.  We started with yellow & they just stuck with us.  We’ve stayed with yellow only, ranging from snow white to fox red in color.  We like them!        –It is not unusual for us to have a litter of black Labradors listed under our available puppies.  We have close friends & family that we highly recommend from time to time with black Labrador puppies.

  • Are you labs English or American?

-We breed English Labs only.  We prefer the nice, mild English temperament & bigger build.  All our adults are English Labs.  Also, any puppies from our friends/family litters that we might recommend is English as well.

  • Will you send daily puppy updates?

-Only in a perfect world.  No, sorry! I cannot commit to that.  We will send you weekly updates, usually every Sunday.  But there is times you will hear from me several times a week.  Our Leadhill families can reach out to us anytime with questions.

  • Can we visit your place in person?

-Absolutely!  With appointment only please. We love showing off our dogs & puppies!

  • Will my puppy be crate trained?

-Your puppy will be introduced to a crate but we never say completely crate trained.  Getting puppies acclimated to crates is a great thing but that does not mean they are not going to go to their forever homes & have accidents in their crate.  The puppy will have to get use to you, your family, your living situation, & your routine first.  For that reason we refuse to say “puppies will be crate trained”.

  • At what ages to you breed your dogs?

-At 2 years if passed all testing(accidents have happened & it’s been before 2- we’re human!) until 6 years.

  • Are you USDA & inspected?

-Yep! We are USDA federal & state.  We get inspected often by both.  AKC also inspects us.  We pass all with flying colors!

  • What is Bred With H.E.A.R.T.?

-AKC Bred with H.E.A.R.T stands for Health, Education, Accountability, Responsibility, and Tradition. Preparing breeders to produce healthy, excellent examples of their breeds is the program’s goal.  It’s a honor to be a part of this program!

  • How does flying a puppy cargo work?

-We book flight & get puppy very acclimated to their crate.  They fly cargo from & to airports that participate in the animal program.  After booking flight we get flight confirmation about a week prior to flight, then it is sent to customer by us.  Puppy must have a health certificate to fly, super easy to get from our veterinarian.  We do not take puppy to airport ourselves, we are 4ish hours from both Kansas & St. Louis airports, we hire a company to pick up the night before & travel with them to the airport. Flights are running $490, which includes crate that you will keep, health cert, & flight.

**We have flown LOTS of pups & have not had 1 serious issue.  All puppies have arrived to their forever homes happy & healthy.  NOW…. Has there been flight delays?, yes.  Has there been a few puppies hesitant to come out of the crate?, yes.  I feel all the horror stories we see on the news or hear about via social media is snubbed-nose breeds.

  • Can I fly in & pick up the puppy myself?

-Absolutely! You make flight arrangements, & purchase soft crate that will fit up airline seat.  Puppy must be between 8-9 weeks of age & under 20# to fly in cabin.  After arrangements are made we will meet you at the airport upon arrival.  Meeting at airport is a $75 travel fee.
